Coming Soon: The Four Types of Mormons Today
Light post today for a larger drop next week!
For the past few weeks, I’ve been building one of my biggest projects yet: a new Mormon Typology.
The story of Mormonism is often told in broad strokes — “active” vs. “inactive,” believer vs. ex-Mormon. But the data tell a more nuanced story. Today’s Latter-day Saints fall into four distinct groups, each with different ways of living, believing, and belonging.
Here’s a glimpse:
One group holds tightly to tradition and religious authority.
Another blends faith with modern life — choosing which practices matter most.
A third is more cultural than religious — identifying as Mormon but with looser ties to belief and practice.
And a fourth lives in the “borderlands,” navigating doubt, disaffiliation, and partial connection.
These groups don’t just differ in faith — they diverge on politics, social issues, and even personal identity.
Next week, I’ll release the full Mormon Typology Report with charts, profiles, and insights that help explain what Mormonism really looks like in 2025.
Subscribe now so you don’t miss the launch — and think about it: Which of the four types might describe you or someone you know?

Nice. Kind of like Catholics and Jews.
